A really good short story. I love getting a little more information on both Ray and the twenty palaces society. Good character development for Ray, and kind of impressive for a novella.
I re-listened to this story at the beginning of the Iron Gate when I picked the series back up. It was helpful to refamiliarize myself with the characters and the state of things going into the next book, and it was again impressive the number of little hints and info given in such a short book. Glad there are more books in the series for me to read!

An entertaining working vacation with Ray Lilly and his boss, Annalise, who travel to Portugal for some hard questions from peers of the Twenty Palaces society. An encounter with a predator puts Ray's life at risk. At this stage in his story arc, he seems resigned to death, but he turns the tables on everyone's expectations again and shines an uncomfortable light on the fragile foundation of the First Palace.

Way too short but somehow funnier. Good to see more of the society and the strange structure does really work even it it is a bit disorienting at first. Honestly though it's a travesty that this series was cancelled and this book isn't full sized. That said I think constraint did force the writing into interesting places.

Enjoyable shorter work in this series. Could have used one more pass by an editor
