Tak děsně specificky japonské, že jsem ze čtení měl tak velký oči, jako mají postavy v animé.

Hands down, one of the creepiest books I've ever read. It actually made me feel crazy just reading it, and I don't think I will again.

A really short read, Autofiction is both depressing and entertaining. If you want a protagonist who's so emotionally damaged, this book's definitely for you.

I picked up this book because of how bipolar the reviews were. Now, I kind of understand where it was coming from. Rin is an exceptionally complicated woman. She is obsessive, overtly jealous, indecisive, manic and a liar (she would hate me for saying this, but it's the truth), yet I somehow got so attached to her…
To be completely honest, the only reason the reviews are so bipolar is because people read what the book is about and then get into it expecting it to not be the thing it said it was. But the book is exactly what it presents itself to be. It's raw, it's violent, it's messed up and it forces you to step out of your comfort zone and accept Rin for who she is. A flawed woman in an even more flawed world.
The younger she got the harder it was for me to read, because at the end of the day I wished for nothing but peace for her. I felt for her and I found myself in some of her complicated feelings.
Very excited to read more works from Kanehara, her writing, while provocative and messy, is just brilliant (at least for me that is).

The translation was a little awkward at times, and I think at times it tried to be a little deeper than it actually was. But the general writing style was enjoyable, and the almost stream of consciousness style writing was more engaging than other examples of it I've read.

The second chapter was a little distracting - it felt like there was no real progression (or regression) between the first and second time periods. But between the second and third, and third and fourth, there was a clear sense of the spiral of Rin's life and mental health.

I went for 4 stars rather than 3 because it isn't a literary masterpiece, and does have its faults, but was still a good and engaging read.

4.5 rounded to 5 because of the negative reviews. no clue why these people read this book after a quick glance at the blurb, telling you upfront that this is going to be about a character who is 'disturbed'. i picked this book up looking for a good read with an obsessive character, and i got it. this bitch's life is insane, of course her internal monologue is too. the structure, going back in time to visit events in her life leading up to the described jealousy with the flight attendant, is something new to me, and executed quite well in my opinion. go read this book! its polarising but worth a glance. just skim the first few pages to get the vibe, and if u dont like it, then dont buy it.
