Loving this series. I'm glad this book, set in Philadelphia, shows the range of racist behaviors and beliefs that characterized the North during the Civil War.

I read this more than any other Addy book, because I had a hand-me-down copy that was a duplicate for a friend. Conveniently, this was my favorite in the series, and it still is, because it is a well-paced, nuanced story in which the author doesn't waste a single detail. I enjoyed reading this as an adult, and appreciate the realistic portrayal of how challenging life was for former slaves in the North, even after they had won their freedom.

I listened to the audiobook version and got WAY into the spelling bee. I was spelling alongside the characters

I read this book when I was a kid and reread it again this week. I purchased the book at a used book sale at my local library. I'm so glad to have these books again and hope my kids will enjoy them like I did!
