Started out slow and full of mathmatics that was over my head. But I really enjoyed the 2nd half of the book.

Surprising 5 star
This is not a book I’d usually go for (thank you Brady) but I’m so glad I did! This book made me think, laugh of loud, tear up more than once, and smile countless times. It’s funny, smart, witty, sarcastic, and pulls on the heart strings. I listed on audio after reading reviews and i have to say, I don’t know if my attention would’ve been kept while reading on paper. There’s alot more science and math than I ever like to read.
I NEED to know what happens next!!! Rocky and Grace, I need a part 2.

Summer Book Review - Book No. 7: “Project Hail Mary” by Andy Weir

Date started: 7/25/22
Date finished: 7/31/22

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (would recommend reading next, especially if you love Sci-Fi)

Spoiler free review: If math and science are your idea of fun, then Andy Weir knows how to write for you. Much like “The Martian” before it, “Project Hail Mary” is heavy on the intricacies of space travel and relativistic physics while still maintaining a lighter tone - most of the time. Don’t get me wrong, there are a few instances where clear and utter despair grab hold of Dr. Ryland Grace and it turns the story to a darker tone. But overwhelmingly, Grace maintains an optimistic and determined attitude in the face of imminent danger, right up until the somewhat predictable conclusion.

Where Weir excels is in the entire creation of the unknown. Using earth science as a foundation, Weir inserts Grace into a hypothetical world where the sun is being consumed by an alien bacteria, and it falls on Grace’s shoulders to figure out the 5 w’s about this bacteria. It’s a novel concept that humanity’s first interaction with an extraterrestrial isn’t some short green man but rather intergalactic pond scum. As the story progresses, so does the science and some of the liberties Weir takes with the explanations, though he does far more deep dives into the background of the science than the mystic hand waving of lesser authors. All in all, it’s somewhat mind-blowing to think that 2 of Weir’s first 3 novels have been so out of this world. But even if his next novel does come back to Earth (figuratively and/or literally), Weir has firmly positioned himself in the upper stratosphere of the current Sci-Fi hierarchy.
