This is a classic example of Brian Michael Bendis infuriating his readers with ret-conning nonsense. The Molecule Man storyline is utter crap: tons of build-up and mystery that completely implodes like the writer didn't even know where he was going with it all. And I'm not confident that BMB did know where it was going. There's barely any action, just a bunch of yapping, useless characters dumped in for next-to-no reason, and established characters doing new stuff for no other reason than being Bendis' trademark.
Readers familiar with Owen Reese (the Molecule Man) will put the book down and wonder what the point was. Why did he make such an odd assortment of friends for himself to hang out with? Why does he claim to be from Dinosaur, Colorado when his Marvel Universe Handbook bio (which is even reprinted at the back of the TPB for our convenience) says he's from Brooklyn? Why does the Sentry (who's already messed up enough) need new powers? Why does Victoria Hand need a back story jammed in here at this point? Why have the lead in to this story involve those two girls (seemingly with fleshed out, interesting origins) and then we've forgotten all about them by the time it's over?
Am I missing something? I remember the final volume of Dark Avengers as being something of a pleasant surprise so hopefully this hasn't soured me on the way to re-reading it.
