I've loved the entire series but this one was extremely disappointing. In fact the ending is so abrupt I thought there was something wrong. I can only presume there is a follow up in the works with so many lose ends? Another wonderful reading by Stephen Pacey who has done all the audiobooks, but this cannot mask the weaker narrative and heavy handed approach taken.

The Betrayal of Trust is the 5th book in the Simon Serrailer series. I have become a huge fan of Susan Hill and this series in particular.
There is a serious rain storm that causes flooding in Lafferton. Some buried bodies of people who were murdered years ago come to the surface. One is identified as a teenager who died 16 years ago. The case is now being reopened and lead by Serrailer.
We also follow an elderly woman, diagnosed with motor neuron disease, and her struggles as it progresses. She is a patient of Simon’s sister, Cat, who is a doctor. She wonders if she should take an alternate route to dealing with the disease.
In addition, Simon meets a married woman, Rachel, and falls in love with her.
This book was not a favorite in the series. I didn’t particularly like the side stories about the woman with MNR and Simon’s new love.

I have liked every other book in this mystery series but this one just didn't click with me. I think it was mainly the author's treatment of the issue of assisted suicide that didn't appeal to me but I also had problems with Simon's latest love affair.

Not as enjoyable as previous; it's a set up book for the next where, I imagine, she will tie up the threads. It could've done without the less than subtle politics on occasion. The love story for Simon Serrailer was quite irritating. Still, I do like the issues she throws up & this was at least thought provoking.

It was good, as all her Serailler novels are, but what an abrupt ending! She is obviously going to take up the threads in her next novel, but I felt very short changed.

This book isn't your typical crime novel. The main story is interspersed with other tales which all join up at the end - some more successfully than others. I enjoyed the (I guess) ongoing story lines about the detectives family and the happenings in the town. Less successful for me was the romance plot line, which felt a bit thin. I'd like to read more of this series.
