Really funny and smart, but in spite of my affinity for this kind of road trip hijinks, it didn’t grab me as much as a lot of her other ones. Still definitely a cut above a lot of other books in the genre.

Hooked me from the start, I loved the banter between the two. And Sophie could hold her own. I would have liked slightly more of a grovel at the end from King. But overall a fantastic read.

This one took me a while to get into, but eventually I really enjoyed King and Sophie’s story and the way they fell for each other. Parts of it were a bit overdramatized for my taste, and some things definitely happened for romance reasons, as Sarah likes to say, but the connection between the two characters was fun, and they really had great banter. I’m hoping to see more of the Talbot sisters together in the upcoming books.

An Offer from a Gentleman - just because of that carriage scene
The Girl with the Make-Believe Husband - fake marriage, nursing back to health

The Lady Hellion (unread but this sounds like a great parallel with a feisty heroine)

4.5- ok, I won’t lie. I really wasn’t expecting to enjoy this book - and I mean really. I only started reading because the audiobook was available on my library app, and I wanted something to listen to during my three hour drive. But dang - the audiobook is really fantastic. The narrator did a phenomenal job, and though I ended up reading the second half of the book (not listening to it), I will say that I enjoyed the audiobook better.

Regardless, this book really took me by surprise. I legitimately have no idea why I enjoyed it as much as I did. If I were to take a step back and analyze the individual components of this book, I would be unimpressed and uninterested. Nothing particularly stands out to me on its own as unique or new; but somehow, McLean manages to craft a really compelling story, and I really can’t figure out how. By nearly every measure, I should have hated this book - the characters do some really stupid things, the consequences don’t pan out in realistic ways, there was some stupid, pointless drama near the end, and the plot was basically nonexistent (beyond some pretty poor measures to throw the mains together). But damn it, I enjoyed the book immensely nonetheless - and I’m so glad I picked it up. I’m a sucker for a cohabitation-heavy, enemies-to-lovers, slow-burn read, and I think it’s fair to say l my emotional response to this book was powerful (though I can often differentiate between an analytical examination of a book and the way said book makes me feel, I often allow the latter a lot of influence in my ratings for books- especially books I read for fun- because I think it is an incredibly important component of the reading experience that goes largely ignored).

I feel like I’m not giving this book its due credit for what it did extremely well: it was written beautifully, I loved both King and Sophie, I adored their banter and most of their interactions, and it had a way of holding your attention and keeping you invested. The writing was smart - which is possibly what I loved the most - and I was consequently drawn in quickly. This book took me by surprise in the best way, and though I haven’t enjoyed any of McLean’s other books nearly as much as this one, I’m optimistic about reading more by her.
