For my first Brandon Sanderson book, I am thoroughly in love and prepared to read the other series based on how the characters are treated alone. Despite everything in the story, nightmares and forced ritual life styles, there is hope. And a love of art. Every sentence is woven between one another, filled with aspirations and joy. It made me laugh, it made me cry, and it made me want to create again. This is a masterpiece of beauty and fun and 100% worth a read to remind us to have fun but take yourself seriously and forgive.

I adored this book. I did feel a little directionless somewhere in the first third, but everything moved so quickly after that. The climax and the big reveal were so fun and unexpected. I wish Painter got a little more appreciation at the end, that’s my only critique.

Soft DNF. May pick it up later. It just is not really speaking to me right now.

I can totally see why so many people enjoy this book so much, but it was just not for me. All I enjoyed was the interesting world building and some ideas here and there. Most of the time, however, I was bored while reading it.

After the event happened, that was supposed to kick off the plot, basically, nothing happened for a very long time. The two protagonists were talking in circles and the plot was moving incredibly slowly. If at least the characters were somewhat likable I would have been fine with it, but I just... I didn't hate them, but I didn't like them either. Which hasn't changed by the end of the book by the way.

The ending and the "Reveal/Plot twist" was... something. You know it's really not that good when the author has to step in, in the form of a "character" to explain to the reader what is even going on. And even then there are still questions left.

Also, I really wish I hadn't read the Epilogue. The ending felt heavy, charged, and meaningful but then the epilogue deus ex machina'ed it into a forced happy ending.

So, overall: Brilliant idea with a not-so-brilliant execution.
