Edgar Allan Poe, one of the most, if not the most, misunderstood geniuses of the literary world, is illustrated as a man with great talent but a heavy problem with drugs, but mainly alcohol.

While this book did express many of his achievements, it heavily focused on the negative.

While he had a very hard life, his love and commitment to literature never wavered. There is something to be said for how a man who lived a mostly impoverished life, never gave up on his dream.

Only posthumously was his art recognized, and not even by his home country, at least until quite a bit later. Poe influenced many artists, not limited to writers, through his works.

However, while briefly mentioned, this book fails to detail his everlasting effects on modern day literature. It mentions a few things, but never really goes into detail for many of the things he can be accredited with either inventing or improving upon.

He is the forefather of detective stories and many attribute his work to have contributed to the art form of surrealism.

A man well before his time, Poe transcended what it meant to be an author.
