i really enjoyed this and it was interesting to be able to have something canon explaining what padme did when first becoming senator.

This was such an unexpected delight; it gave me a newfound love for Padmé and all of her handmaidens that I otherwise wouldn’t have. I can’t wait to read the rest of the series!

I love Padmé so much. The book was amazing because it was all about Padmé and her getting stuff done in the Senate. I agree with the assessment (of one Sarah Hass) that it was a little slow. The beginning and end were incredibly interesting, but the middle was just a lot of non-action and thinking. I recommend this book to those who love Padmé, love Star Wars, or love the politics of Star Wars but would not recommend it to those who have not seen Star Wars or are just here for the cool lightsaber parts of Star Wars. There are no lightsabers in this book. To summarize, 10/10, would recommend, love Padmé.

One sentence (if you don't want to read all of my review)s: While this book is not necessarily needed to understand the canon and overall world of Star Wars, it is an enjoyable and quick read that will help enrich the personalities of characters that previously did not have much.

----------

This book is what every fan of Padme needs in their life. This book takes place following the years that Padme spends as queen of Naboo as she transitions into a senator. In the movies, it is so easy to forget that she is a person who has the ability to make mistakes. This story builds on that and shows how becoming a senator was not the easiest process for her and some of the challenges she went through. The deep dive into who the handmaidens are is an amazing way to build on these invisible figures, despite the fact that they were not even said in the movies, you will leave this book knowing the names of every handmaiden and caring about them. What I really enjoyed about this book is that it is Padme when she is written by a woman. Which, I am aware that non-women are able to write female characters well, there is just a special something that E.K. brings because of the perspective she has on that. She took a character that I really enjoyed (Padme) and made it so that I bring her up almost every time I discuss Star Wars. While this book is not necessarily needed to understand the canon and overall world of Star Wars, it is an enjoyable and quick read that will help enrich the personalities of characters that previously did not have much.

Thank you E.K.!

Queen’s Shadow is one of those books where everything that has been said about it (both positive and negative) is true. Is it an amazing book that us Star Wars fangirls have been waiting for forever? YES. Is it a slow-moving book with a barely visible plot? YES. Whether or not you’re going to like this book relies entirely on if you enjoy character-driven stories and/or if you love Padmé Amidala and her handmaidens.

I loved this book. I loved all the details about the strategic decisions behind political Naboo fashion. I loved the chance to focus on the handmaidens who are always in the background of Padmé’s story. And, last but not least, I loved getting to know Padmé more. This book takes place between TPM and AotC when Naboo’s newly elected queen requests that Padmé take a seat in the senate. As Queen of Naboo, Padmé created a specific persona with her handmaidens both for protection so that it could be easily copied and for political strategy. Now that she’s no longer Queen, Padmé has to discover who she really is and what she wants from her life. The description of how Padmé compartmentalized her life in order to be queen (and later senator) adds a layer of dysfunction that makes her crazy decision to secretly marry Anakin make more sense.

There are multiple perspectives in this novel, but Padmé’s and Sabé’s appear most frequently. Sabé—portrayed by Kiera Knightley in TPM—is a badass Hufflepuff and her loyalty to Padmé means that she is always a part of whatever mission Padmé has taken up. This story belongs to both of them and their friendship is beautiful.

This novel shines a light on the amazing Padmé Amidala and her handmaidens and adds beautiful color and pattern to the fabric of their stories. The details Johnston brings to the SW universe make this a book a treasure and adds to enjoyment of the films. I can’t wait to read more adventures of Padmé and her handmaidens.
