Za ljubitelje umetnosti; mračna, puna opisa, vođena strašću i požudom.

There is probably a reason that there were only two books in the "New Tales of the Vampires" series. I actually liked Pandora a bit, but this book doesn't do much for me, and I usually like Rice's novels.

Vittorio himself is not all that interesting, which is a bit problematic when he's going to be the focus of the entire novel. Unlike Louis, Lestat, Armand... you know, the other characters we actually find ourselves liking, Vittorio just seems to be what I would venture to call "emo." He's just not developed enough for me to actually like or care about much as a reader.

It is fair to say that I could do without the Christian influences here. The pagan route was a lot better in Pandora but honestly, did we need to delve into Christianity here? I think not. It did not highlight any of the story for me.

But the biggest problem is Vittorio's motivation throughout the novel. His entire family gets slaughtered, and he immediately decides that he wants to seek revenge. This was maybe the most admirable characteristic of Vittorio in the entire book. While he arguably lacked a plan, and was somewhat unconvincing as a badass, I was willing to roll with it. But you mean to tell me that he then ends up falling in love with the very woman that murdered his family? Really? Was this supposed to be some sort of captivity novel where he only fell in love with her because... I highly doubt it was supposed to be a captivity novel, but it would have been more convincing had you sold it to me like this!

Vittorio is a character that I just cannot fall in love with like so many of the other characters I've enjoyed in the Vampire Chronicles. If you enjoyed this book, clearly I'm missing something, because if any other author published this it would get average reviews. Hard core Rice fans seem to appreciate the mediocrity of this novel, but I'm not one of them.

Read it if you feel you must read everything ever published by Rice. If you're okay with saving yourself some confusing storyline though, skip it.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and the refreshing take on vampirism. I never thought about what the vampire considered his mortal soul to be. The word vampire is not even mentioned until almost the end of the book. This was a very delightful read and I wish I could read it again and experience the same joy again and again.

The truth is that I really wanted to finish with all the Chronicles and "Vittorio" managed to convince me that I am right by doing just that. I barely managed to get through the entire book and very often I wanted to put it aside, and only my persistence kept me going. I think I got tired of the writing style, with the same descriptions and lack of engaging action. The mixing of the vampires and angels is a bit peculiar, for some it all falls in the supernatural category, but for me is a bad mixture for this kind of book. It shows too much about the author, the questioning about religion, good and evil, angels, and I was left with the feeling that vampires were just stuffed in the tale. However, this time just didn't work for me and I'd rather keep the distance from now on. Moreover, there was some eroticism involved in the story which seemed awkward and wrong.

Vittorio was really annoying, he kept talking and was quite slow in understanding the circumstances. Another thing I disliked was the fact that he just couldn't decide if he was fascinated by the vampires or if he considered them demons, if he was attracted or repugnant by them. I comprehend the compulsion, the feeling that you can't stop staring, but this was ridiculous. In my opinion, the story didn't really have a solid frame and by the end it just fell off.
