When I first read this story last year, I gave it two stars. I didn’t like it and I couldn’t connect with any of the characters beyond a surface-level, “I hope they don’t die because that would be sad for them” way.
But my friend gifted me the graphic novel and honestly, I’m blown away. The combination of the story with the illustrations changed everything for me. Suddenly, I was drawn into the story in a way I hadn’t been before. I found myself actually wishing the ending would be different and that things would work out better. I found myself rooting for the characters, even when I knew how it would end.
So, if you initially disliked this story, I recommend giving it another chance in the graphic novel format. It made a world of difference for me, and I think it might for you, too.

This adaptation did a much better job at connecting Grisha infighting with Grisha persecution, so the narrative made sense in relation to the resolution and character development. The art was nice; I particularly liked the light line weight and the lettering.
However, this was definitely not as entertaining as the original short story on which this is based. The original content was snappier, and I preferred the narrative structure of present-past-present as it created mystery and a sense of foreboding. Unfortunately this was pretty linear and even added unnecessary events - it seemed like there was an excess of panels used, too.
Graphic: Death, Murder, and Child abuse
Moderate: Blood, Violence, Death of parent, Injury/Injury detail, Animal death, and Gore
Minor: Sexism, Misogyny, Bullying, Fire/Fire injury, Ableism, Grief, and Cursing
Moderate: hunting Minor: self-injury, eugenics, loss of a loved one
