My college roommates and I used to sing the Yo Gabba Gabba song "Don't Bite Your Friends" on a regular basis for various fuzzy reasons, and it's all I heard in my head while reading this silly little ode to keeping your teeth to yourself. Molly Idle's lovely, graceful illustrations make me feel so nostalgic - but for what, I still don't know.

GREAT rhythm! This would be a great storytime book about biting. Overall message is "Biting is for food" which is great positive language to redirect this behavior.

I don't like to wield my managerial perogative too often, but tonight was an exception when I forced three of my colleagues to sit and listen while I read aloud "People Don't Bite People." But this is a book that begs to be read aloud, again and again. The concept -- don't bite -- is simple, yet critical, in the lives of the picture book audience. The language is brilliant and funny and sophisticated.

A dog may bite.
A horse may bite.
They're animals, you see.
But we can choose to use our words.
We're people, you and me.

We all need a reminder that "we can choose to use our words," whether we're talking about biting or passive-agressive sighing. (TMI?)

And, it ends with a wonderful twist. Which is just the best thing when one is reading aloud to a group of children (or colleagues).

Add to this delightful language, the gorgeous illustration by Molly Idle. Rounded, slightly retro, with bright colors, the images clearly illustrate the lesson, "Biting is for food."

Adults and children alike will find joy in listening to People Don't Bite People. In fact, I have a copy here, do you have a minute?

A silly, but instructional, book on where it is appropriate to sink your chompers. Your dad? No. Your friend? No. Animals may do it but we are people. Rhyming words and whimsical illustrations will make this little life lesson enjoyable.

PS: It's OK to sink your chompers into people made of gingerbread!

This picture book is all about not biting people but being able to bite other things like gum. Animals may bite too, but they are not people. Even if you mood is bad, you don’t bite other people. No biting mothers or fathers, you choose who you chomp. This book must be read aloud with its galloping rhyme that even has a chorus that repeats and invites listeners to join in too. The entire book is a look at biting and has a light hearted tone throughout that will have children giggling. The illustrations by award-winning Idle have the same feel as her popular Flora books but this time with a vintage flair. Ideal for sharing with a group of kids! Appropriate for ages 2-4.

the rhymes are super fun (biting is for food/you're not a zombie, dude) and there's enormous kid appeal here. i'm not sure how well it would work for parents looking for bibliotherapy (and whether or not that ish works is another conversation entirely), but this will absolutely work for many read alouds.
