Estranged by Ethan M. Aldridge

Estranged is a delightful Faerie tale about family and belonging. I felt at home in the author's world, which was structured around the Olde Faerie lore complete with changelings, dragons, trolls, magic, and the careless, glamorous Fae. While the story is somewhat predictable, it's predictability fits within the Faerie tale genre and Ethan M. Aldridge did a wonderful job of using existing Faerie lore to build his own version of the High Faerie courts. I also appreciated the heavy emphasis on family, especially on positive sibling relationships based in mutual love, protection, trust, and forgiveness.

As for content, the book does have some implied romance between a witch an a human changeling, but I don't remember anything beyond a hug and maybe a kiss.

I don't read too many stories on changling or the fey, although it seems to always be a treat because I find gems like this book and Beautiful Darkness by Fabien Vehlmann. This is a really well built world for it being one full volume. You really feel for the characters, both Edmund and the Human Childe are sympathetic characters, there's a bit of a strain on their first meeting and you really feel strongly for both of them. The underground fey-wilde is fantastic and really fun. The colors and illustrations are excellent. Wonderful characters, story pacing, and art makes this a really great read! ~Ashley

This review will be for both volumes; read at your own risk.

This was a really fun changeling story! Edmund has known he was a changeling the whole time, while the Childe has always known he doesn’t belong. The two are thrown together to survive a fae coup and end up getting close.

The art is really cool and pretty and the plot is pretty solid. I really liked this one!

A fun, whimsical story with beautiful artwork. I recommend this for fans if the Underworld Chronicles by Suzanne Collins. It's a similar tone and target audience.

This was a great story, with so many interesting and creative characters. I was left wanting more of this imagined world, which includes the human and fae realms. And believe me, those weren’t the only beings we see in this novel. There is so much more going on in this book, with an extremely lovable character like Whick, and a changeling I quickly began rooting for.

What makes this novel even more intriguing are the watercolor filled pages, with the dark mediums that are incorporated at just the right places, with many illustrated creatures that are definitely not part of a “fantasy paperback reject”. I especially loved the changes between Edmund and the “Childe”, the many pages that were filled with their unique qualities.

Much of that had to do with Edmund and how he is written in this novel. I loved that he wasn’t a most common kind of changeling. He became more than what was expected of him, which made for a better story. The Childe though, took a little more getting used to, finding a same balance with, but as the story progressed it started to come full circle for him as well.

Then, if all of that wasn’t enough, there’s a dragon that enters the story in the second half of the novel. I didn’t know I needed anything more, but I was proven wrong and happily took in all of the craziness that began happening the more I read. There’s something going on in almost every page of this book, along with many settings to keep the story going. So looking forward to the sequel!

My experience reading this book ended up being not what I expected. On the tin, it should have been a book that I really enjoyed. The art style is great, the world building was interesting, but I just ended up feeling kind of meh about it.
