Let's start with "Chu knows more about wuxia than I do." Yet I recognize that some of the style, characters, action, attitude come from wuxia, which Chu openly states. We should not expect this book to conform to other established fantasy styles, because it isn't trying to.

I suppose this one had to have a Sad Sask protagonist, the hapless dork that things happen to. This balances the solar system of female killing machines around him. With all those killers, AND the Mute Men, who seem to scare even these killers, it's a wonder anyone's left.

The use of jing is deftly handled.

Not sure about the Grass Sea and the rolling pod cities. The latter seems all too familiar, and the former a tad far-fetched.

Overall we have an adequate plot, lots of action (even if important people are apparently unkillable because the plot needs them), and wuxia-style humor. It may have been a slip to include such things as having one killer say "Ew, gross;" leaves us uncomfortably close to "like, gag me with a spoon, that's grotty."

Too long, but fun.

I feel kind of lied to ngl (by the synopsis). Will be continuing.

I was invested in this story and its characters from the first page! I cannot wait to read what happens next in the sequel especially after that ending.
