This was a really enjoyable read. It made me cry, it made me cringe, it made me want to keep reading even when i couldn't keep my eyes open anymore. I really enjoy the character diversity. It gave me a bit of hope for the future honestly.
It was a story diven sci-fi rather than a science driven one, but the science aspects were still pretty chill. A lot of it was context based stuff you figured out as the story progressed.

I can see why people consider this a comfort read, it’s very wholesome and almost entirely character-driven, mainly an exploration of issues of race, gender, and sexual orientation framed on a galactic scale with very little in the way of plot. But in order for this style of book to really work for me I have to be pretty invested in the characters, and I just wasn’t in this case. There was nothing wrong with them, they just didn't stand out to me or have personal struggles/dilemmas that I found particularly gripping. Still, my cup of tea or not, it was pleasant and people looking for thoughtful sci-fi from a social standpoint will enjoy.

TL;DR: A crew of mismatched beings embark on a dangerous quest to punch a hole in space. But they got this, don’t worry!

Heb me erg goed vermaakt.

This was just so delightful! The crew of the Wayfarer is a delight to hang out with for the length of this book, with each character developing incredible depth and making you care about their highs and lows. And their adventures, presented in a way that is basically loosely related vignettes on the way to The Big Thing, is such a fun way to see different combinations of characters interact with different settings and cultures. This is very much a character-driven story, and Chambers is masterful with it.

It’s also important to note with how much care Chambers treats the different species and their respective cultures and quirks. We often observe these non-human “sapients” through the eyes of the reader surrogate, the Human (always capital H) Rosemary, but she’s been trained for relating to different species. So instead of the usual “these aliens are different than humans and therefore weird” reading experience typical of (see: white dudes) most sci-fi writing of this ilk. She also handles gender, and the ways the Human understanding of gender obviously would not track with other completely different species, with tact and care, even going as far to have people mess it up.

And the actual world building! Stunning! The information is woven in so organically and helps flesh out what we understand about both our characters and their mission in ways that feel rewarding and just plain exciting. All the different worlds and species felt fully-realized, even when you’re only shown some of the surface level information.

I really can’t say enough about how much I loved this book, and I’m really looking forward to the next installments and hanging out more with the crew of the Wayfarer.
