Watson is the fellow who gave us the idea of "Citizens for a Lesser Seattle." He's also of that generation of columnists who were such a feature of American cities at mid-20th-century: Mike Royko in Chicago, Jack Smith in LA, Jimmy Breslin in NY, Herb Caen in San Francisco.

Like Cyril Connolly, at his best Watson's columns use the matter at hand for essays about grander themes. He's also an invaluable resource for getting the flavor of mid-century Seattle just right.
