Suprisingly I didn't enjoy this one quite as much as I liked the first book, but I did still have a good time reading this! I did enjoy getting to see Alex again, this time back at their family's old hunting lodge where a creature from an old folktale is said to reside. This creature kills by sitting on your chest and stealing the air from your lungs while you sleep, which is terrifying! We also saw Alex dealing with the after effects of the events of the first book, and some characters come back like Angus and Miss Potter. This is more of a slow burn horror, much of the eerie stuff doesn't come into play (for me at least) until the second half. I listened to the audiobook for this and I think the narrator did a wonderful job with it! Trigger warnings everywhere for this one, including: anxiety, PTSD, fungus (again), depression, sickness of the lungs, body horror, animal violence, and discussion of the war.

There are so many banger lines in this book! I wasn't sure what to expect going into this book as the sequel to a retelling of a well known horror tale, but this book is so strong on its own! I love the continuation of Angus and Miss Potter's acquaintance, the new additions to the cast of cha acters, and the exploration of Easton's home country. I also really enjoyed the addition of situationally and indivi ually specific pronouns!

I just about cried in the library reading the scene with the horses when Hob's face slid off like a moth wing, sticking to Easton. That scenario and Easton's own terror was like an externalization of my actually real nightmares. Great writing, but that scene hurt so bad. But at least dream Hob didn't seem to be in pain as he crumbled.

4/5 ⭐️

As the sequel of the book that got me back into reading, this was an instant buy! Following these characters again reminded me how much I like T. Kingfisher’s writing! This book was fast-paced with the perfect amount of dreary. It feels like a gloomy day right before it rains. I will be putting all T. Kingfisher’s books on my TBR at this point.
