I fell in love with Mary H. K. Choi's writing. Like actually fell in love. I could read a sentence and feel a slight flutter in my chest like what. It's increadable. The way she handled all these topics of life and made them into a story was truly inspiring. It felt like an important story to read, and I’m glad that I did. With that being said, I really had to push through to be able to finish this story. I think it was hard because a lot of Jaynes thoughts and thought patterns were similar to my own a while back. And therefore I wasn’t able to read a lot in one sitting.
It also wasn’t a “page turner” in my opinion.
But, like I said, it was worth the read.

Fairly predictable plot, but good for understanding and exploring the dynamic of older, parentified sister and younger, rebellious, managed sister. Glad to see progress from the younger sister and she was a bit insufferable in the beginning (though, big sis fucked up too).

I was skeptical about this book at first - the narrator, Jayne, is pretentious and self-conscious à la Holden Caulfield, and believes that New York is the coolest place with the coolest people and it will make her cool too. Much of the Jayne's decisions are childish and reckless, and it was hard for me to relate to her. However, once Jayne reconnects with her sister June I really fell for the book. They have an excellent hot and cold dynamic, with pithy yet realistic dialogue. Choi describes details in their lives with such precise and realistic detail (without being overly poetical) that surely Choi must have observed them in her real life (June filling her fridge with uncovered bowls of half-eaten meals; Jayne and June joking around with their Korean face masks). Particularly, Choi draws on her own experience with disordered eating to create a character's whose actions involving food seem completely strategized, careful, and reasonable, painting a picture of illness that is so much more acute, disturbing, and understandable than other instances of EDs I've read in fiction. It was also interesting how she juxtaposed Jayne's ED with June's cancer diagnosis, which she summarized well in this interview. Because Jayne grows so much as a character in the book, I ended up being totally ok with my dislike of her early on. The only thing that I found a bit lacking was her relationship with Patrick - he seemed a bit too good to be true.
