Let the smell of salt remind you of a paper basket of fried clams you ate once, squeezing them with lemon as you walked on a boardwalk...Decide you will replicate the meals those smells remind you of, no matter if they're hot dogs and Boston baked beans, or corn, or cinnamon toast eaten off paper plates."

SO GOOD. Practical except for when she says to fillet your own sardines. What a great book. Not a pretentious ninny or someone trying to be super down-home. A real cook, who eats an enormous variety of things on toast. I want an extra copy of this book without all the pretty words so I don't have to dogear every single page that has five recipes mixed into it.

Ok, she says a few crazy things, and I'm unlikely to use much of her advice at all because I'm not her and the contents of her kitchen are not the contents of my kitchen, but this was basically 227 pages of someone describing everything they cook and eat and I am here for it. My review is here.

This would be a fantastic thing to have someone with a public radio voice read to you at bedtime, to put you to sleep and dream of good food.
I wholeheartedly agree with this cooking philosophy, and I picked up a few good tips, but it was also frustrating to read as someone who tries to cook meals that don't involve animal products, and someone who cooks for young children.
The prose is leisurely, and probably soothing and inspirational if you're in the mood for it. As someone who has been lacking in leisure time, I found it a bit precious.
I'm on the fence about whether to recommend this or not, but if it intrigues you, pick up a copy and read any page or three. If you find it delightful you will love the book. If not, don't feel obligated to read the rest.

I liked the idea behind this book, but not the recipes mentioned in it. Like many people have mentioned in their reviews, it did change my thinking towards cooking. Instead of deciding on a recipe to cook and then searching for vegetables to add to it, the author talks about a different approach where you just make something with what you have. This book is great for someone who is trying to lead a minimalistic life. I loved the way author simplifies cooking and breaks down the whole process. The only problem I had was that most of the recipes and ideas are European - mostly Italian and French and the author keeps using few ingredients like olive oil, butter, parsley in every single dish she mentions. She does mention Mediterranean and Asian/Indian cooking few times but wish she had considered different cuisines while writing this book.
Still this is a great book to have along with your cookbooks. Highly recommend it for people who are interested in learning the art of cooking and for those who are not interested in blindly following recipes.
