The Last argument of Kings by Joe Abercrombie

4.75⭐
First law trilogy: 4⭐

A great trilogy
First book was shaky but the second and third well made up for it. This author specializes in the Grimdark subgenre of Fantasy.

Read this if you want a less sweeping but finished series influenced by GRRM and ASOIAF (Game of thrones).

This is not a traditional fantasy with clear good vs  bad guys. Everyone has their moments of bravery, weakness, evil, and selfishness. The style has really grown on me. The ending tied up the ends but they were grounded in more likely scenarios than obvious  and less likely good triumphs all, the relationships are resolved, everyone is on the mend, etc. I really enjoyed it.

The final book in this “epic-fantasy-as-Tarantino-movie” spectacle was definitely my favorite of the bunch. Abercrombie brings his storylines to fitting and satisfying conclusions that reward careful reading of the previous books.

Throughout the first trilogy, I loved the repetition of phrases and themes used to encapsulate the growing frustration of all of the characters. I had my suspicions about one of the main characters in book 2 and I’m glad to know I was right. The ending felt perfect for each of the characters, complex and not at all happy.
