An odd book that is nevertheless cute and entertaining. A nice Halloween read.

I really enjoyed the details in the illustrations with the shadowy figures and such. It foreshadowed the ending without giving anything away. Great for young children who enjoy a bit of spookiness to their stories. The illustrations are rather dark and mysterious, adding to the aesthetic. Nothing too scary happens, but the feel of the book is dark and creepy.

I did find it odd that Annie is rewarded for not listening or following the rules. Her family tells her not to go to the spooky house, but she does it anyway. She also sneaks out in the middle of the night to do so. And enters the house despite all of the literal signs telling her not to. Could be a confusing message to children about listening to adults and not trespassing.

Definitely a fun read with a surprise at the end that I did not see coming, but the messages about trespassing and such were a bit odd. Overall, I enjoyed it, but it may warrant a conversation about not sneaking out in the middle of the night and entering strange houses if read to young children.

November 2018 - a fun Halloween story with a nice hint of spookiness.

This book made me smile. There is a little feeling of rebellion and of being brave. I loved the art and it's unusual to have an older looking kid as lead in the story. She looked 13 or something.

She is told not to go to the haunted mansion. She is even dared. Well, she is brave and not scared and she goes anyway. There is a fold out at the end that reveals what is at the mansion. The line before the page does give it away. I always thought it would be cool to be born on Halloween, but maybe not as everyone else wants to trick-or-treat.

The kids had great fun with this book. The nephew really got into the mystery. The niece yelled out as soon as she knew what was going to happen and was proud when it was right. My niece is very smart. The niece also liked the blue streak in the girls hair. I like this story.

Might be amusing for kids - but adults might be nonplussed to read it.

I could see this being one of those books that kids beg you to read over and over and you're just thinking, "Again?"
