This book is a hard one to rate.

Pros: Lakota-folklore based tale set in modern times (hell, they had spaghetti and meatballs for dinner). Multigenerational/kin-based adoption family (grandparents raising grandchildren). Lovely pictures, the kids loved the story even though I was worried it was a bit long.

Cons: The main thing that happens is a boy in a wheelchair is "cured" and given his "walking legs." Not prosthetics (which would be awesome!), he's just able to walk. It's very Tiny Tim of the story. Why can't we have stories with disabled characters where the reason they exist isn't just to be cured or be disabled? Why couldn't he have just gotten a present he really wanted?
