Josefina Javelina has big dreams-- she longs to be a ballerina. After receiving a letter from her cousin in California, Josefina decides to visit and realize her dream in Hollywood. The "sheep" that recognizes her talent, however, may not be quite what he seems...

The exuberance of this book stands out, both in the colorful illustrations and often rhyming text. Josefina's optimistic energy is refreshing (as are the pig-themed puns for adults-- the talent seeker refers to Cary Grunt and Gregory Peccary at one point). Both a love song to the desert and an encouragement not to give up on one's dreams, this book is sure to delight its audience. I can see it working especially well in a read-aloud setting.
