I disliked this book so much. It was boring and it became a task to just finish it. The diary parts were so bad and took me out of the more interesting part which was the 1990 Isobel. The police procedural aspect was tedious, again boring, and overall, every single character felt so thin, no personality, like nothing would make me care about any of these people. It’s just not a good book (to me) and I wouldn’t recommend to anyone.

Great premise and I really wanted to watch this mystery unfold but it took me four pick-ups to get through this book. The characters were so hard to follow because other than Isobel, they had slim to no personalities, no descriptions, and never followed a pattern.  It felt oddly long for such a short novel and I found myself wanting to just read the last 5 pages and call it a day.

Like many others, I came to this novel as a huge fan of Sophie Ward’s stellar debut. I didn’t read any copy or reviews before reading as to have no expectations, except based on what I remembered of the author’s writing style. This is a very different novel from LOVE AND OTHER THOUGHT EXPERIMENTS but was a wholly engrossing thriller, a genre I don’t read much (although I did try my hand at writing one once upon a time lol). I also tend not to love alternating POVs or alternating timelines, but this book handled them with grace. I would’ve appreciated more time with Detective Sally Carter—her past and personal life take up very little page space—but otherwise I thought this was a compassionate, emotional, and well-written sophomore novel.
