The Stepney Green Killer defies genre. It's a thriller, possibly a horror, with heart and insight. The story is told in three voices: the killer who talks us through the kills, how they are chosen and what the killer does to them; Dolores, a retired woman who slaves over her husband and is ignored by him. We get inside her head as she deals with the changes in her husband and the degrees of her love for him. Finally, Brian, a high school outcast way behind on his project which needs to be done to graduate, meanwhile he deals with a father who berates him and has no love for him whatsoever. Brian and Dolores are addicted to the Stepney Green Killings, her need to journal everything and try to solve it. Him as the topic for his project. A gruesome book that manages to make you care for the main characters and understand what makes them tick. Both brutal and beautiful.
