This story takes place in South Korea but I think anyone reading it from anywhere in the world can find some situations that are familiar to them.
The author mixed statistics with her prose in a way that you'd typically see in a narrative non-fiction. So for example, something would happen to the main character and the author's voice would interject with "n% of women in SK get paid x% less...etc etc." This really worked for the story because the author was clearly communicating that her character was a stand in for the experiences of many women.
