I expected to find the message from this book powerful and touching, but since I’m (thankfully) born in a more progressive country I thought there wouldn’t be much for me to relate to. Damn was I wrong. In my opinion every single woman can find experiences to relate to when it comes to this book, and the realisation of that startled me.

“Kim Jiyoung, born 1982” is a feministic masterpiece.

Chronicles the life of a fictional Korean woman and the sexism she faces at each life stage. Told in a dry tone, and a bit slow, but interesting and a bit different. 3.5 stars

Incredible coverage of how the patriarchy affects the lives of women from before their birth all the way to married life in South Korea. Very insightful book.

I think that this novella will stay with me a long time; a lot of it is relatable, despite the obvious differences in culture and country - these are difficulties women go through even in so-called 'modern times': familial and traditional expectations, sexual harassment of all kinds, the act of getting married to a man who will support the household, to have a child, and still maintain a career wherein the expectations involve being childfree. And the effects of these man-made societal expectations and responsibilities only substantiate into mental health injury; issues with self-esteem, depression, and the like.
