I received a copy of The Boy and the Banyan Tree by Mahtab Narsimhan and Dharmali Patel from Scholastic Canada in exchange for an honest review.

Move over, The Giving Tree - there's a new tree in town and I love how unproblematic, giving, and beautiful its story is. The Boy and the Banyan Tree is about a banyan tree in a village in India who loved a little boy. The little boy can climb high into the banyan tree's branches, hang off of its roots and be shaded from the sun under its shade. As the boy grows older, the banyan tree shares its wisdom and advice with the boy who follows it - allowing both the boy and the tree to be happy. The boy eventually grows up and moves away to explore the world - and the banyan tree is happy for the boy even though she misses the boy. And when the boy later returns as a man with his own family, he has grown to be a kind and hardworking individual. What a beautiful story about love that doesn't require one party to completely sacrifice everything for the happiness of another.
