It took me a little bit to get into the story and see where it was going but once i did it was beautiful. It’s such a hopeful story of finding out where you belong and that home isn’t necessarily a place but a community.

The author thanked Elizabeth Acevedo as the “godmother” of this book and it shows i think. It’s just as lyrically beautiful as her books.

beautiful and aching with emotion, enhanced for me by the beautiful book club I was able to listen to and learn from about it.

I think this book falls prey to a lot of diaspora literature traps and tropes, so there is quite a bit to analyze and critique from this standpoint; but what it says about how we misunderstand our own power, and about what we owe each other makes it a worthwhile read. throw in a good ghost story and I'm sold.
