I thought this would be more Syfy, but it is too much fantasy

4.5 stars. I had no idea what this book was actually about going into it, but I love Marie Lu and had to give it a chance. I was shocked to find out that it is kind of a zombie book, but I did enjoy it and it went by really quickly. I found the writing to be a little awkward in some places, and the plot was predictable, but I really liked the characters and how developed their backstories were. Tamlin being mute and being able to communicate with the Strikers and see them do their job through sign language was really cool, and not a kind of representation that I see very often in books. I especially liked seeing the relationship between Red and Talin grow, and their story and dynamic reminded me a lot of Scarlet and Wolf from the Lunar Chronicles series. I look forward to hopefully seeing them and the other characters reunite in book 2.

  • Ms. Lu Done did it again
  • This book was nothing short of magnificent
  • Talin is an angel. Her vulnerability as well as strengths were showcased beautifully
  • The book centers around Talin but Lu writes in a way that makes Talin’s  story one of millions
  • The world building was excellently done. Not too simple it lack creativity and not too complex it evaporates brain cells
  • The dystopian world and theme isn’t original—there are Many out there like this—but Lu spins it beautifully
  • The battle scenes were a little lack luster but then again I don’t know the first thing about fighting so—
  • Not heavily romancy and for once I really like that
  • Some characters had more backbone than others(maybe there’s a reason)
  • The themes of bravery, loyalty, strength, and vulnerability—chefs kiss
  • I don’t think Mara is dead yet
