A touching story that succeeds in both showing genuine love between the grandmother and grandaughter and in imforming us about a specific instance of gender discrimination of Anishinaabe women.

I received a copy of Heart Berry Bling by Jenny Kay Dupuis and illustrated by Eva Campbell from Highwater Press in exchange for an honest review.

In Heart Berry Bling, Maggie is going to visit her granny who is going to be teaching her how to bead for the first time. She is so excited to learn and as the two work side by side, Granny also shares her story about how beading connects her to her Anishinaabe culture. She shares the history that affected her - how when she got married she was forced to leave her home and lost her First Nations status. The story she shares goes hand in hand with the beading that Maggie also does as she soon discovers that beading is a journey in itself. Heart Berry Bling is a beautiful story about First Nations history, Anishinaabe beadwork, and the importance of passing on traditions and stories.
