While overall I did enjoy the book I thought the pacing was a bit all over the place, and the last 50 or so pages felt out of place with the story and was honestly slightly crazy. I thought one of the characters ptsd was well written and not sensationalised. And I did enjoy how Viola’s transness was written and wasn’t made to be the main point of conflict in the connection with the love interest but the conflict was kind of annoying because realistically they had nothing stopping them being together. I feel like Mira needs her own book or story with her aged up slightly to explore her sexuality because her storyline felt a little shallow and then also forced at the end.

Alexis Hall is one of my go-to's for feel-good romance (although I'm not sure everyone would agree with this categorization). This is the first historical romance I've read with an explicitly trans main character (I've also read Unmasked by the Marquess by Cat Sebastian, but it is unclear whether the character in question is
GNF, nonbinary, or a trans man
) and I think it was very interesting and well-done.

Slow and brooding. Childhood friends to lovers, but she faked her death while fighting in the war. This book just didn’t do it for me. Great trans rep, but I’m not super into historical books. We also went on far too long about his substance abuse problems. 100 pages could have easily been cut in my opinion.

Refraining from rating. Not a bad book, but I ended up disliking. A combination of writing style, themes, my own mood.

Wow wow wow. This is one of the best historical romances I’ve ever read. The premise is so unique and so heartachingly good. I’m a sucker for a best friends to lovers trope, but the added twist of one friend thinking the other is dead, but in reality still lives, but is now living as their true self really enthralled me.
The narrator did an incredible job bringing this story to life. Little touches like gasps, talking through laughter, and a small slurp when a character takes a sip of tea really added a theatrical touch and enhanced the storytelling
