Stan has never recovered from his daughter's death during Corpse Days when zombies ran riot. Now that a vaccine has gained an uneasy control, Stan drifts along as a legal zombie killer. When he meets Heather, head of a zombie killing gang, she offers him purpose just as they discover that zombie hell is coming again in the form of a deranged church who want to be zombies to complete God's work.
I expected this to be a straight zombie killathon but it was more than that. Yes we have some zombie killing but this book has other interesting subplots like Heather's secret(I'm not telling!), Stan coping with his past, zombie farms, zombie raves and the church that is going to Hell and no kidding! Focusing on the sub plots and not just the zombie killings made this a more intelligent zombie book in the way The Walking Dead series did for TV zombies. There were other things to worry about than zombies because when Hell breaks loose, humans are just as dangerous. Plot wise it was enjoyable and I thought that the storytelling was entertaining.
The characters were good. Stan was great. He was capable but vulnerable, doubting his failing eyesight and ability to get the job done. Heather was also good-obsessed with person she replaced, lying to her friends and trying to keep everyone safe while dancing to other people's tunes. You'll find out what I mean when you read the book. I loved Mary! She was funny and in-your-face and a little scary for single men to deal with! The other members of the group could perhaps have been a bit more developed but it didn't affect the story in any way.
There was a good sprinkling of humour about the zombies as well. The author mentions that cold symptoms were often the first sign of zombie infection.
"It was a hell of a time for those with allergies."
And a description of the modern take on zombie culture amused me greatly.
"Then there was the less than handsome fellow who became an overnight internet sensation by walking around San Diego with a four foot pole impaled through his sternum. Needless to say, he had gone viral."
On the niggle side of things, you just can't imagine why Heather would have chosen the boys for this mission, with the possible exception of Blake. But that is a personal view of the plot and not a critical take on the book itself. I would have liked a bit more of the zombie killing-maybe like the cabin scene when Heather has to make a run for it. A couple of really scary zombie attacks would have been fun.
Overall, if you like zombies, you should enjoy this one. It is not mega gory so should appeal to most horror/apocalypse fans too. I'd give this one 3.5 out of 5.
