A little weird with the ending, but a good build up.

This is a strange book. It sees what happens to a musician, after he runs into Charlie Jacobs, a preacher, with a love of electricity, who has issues with his faith. They first meet when the musician is a kid, when Jacobs helps his brother, and they meet subsequently at regular intervals, where we learn more about both, and Jacobs' love of electrical cures, and belief in the ever after.

It's a good read, rattling along at a good rate. Jacobs' creepiness makes him one of King's best characters I think, letting the air of impending disaster gradually build up around him. It's hard to describe the use of electricity in the book, without giving away the structure of what happens, but suffice to say, it's well handled.

My one grumble would be that it reads a little like Shrine, by James Herbert, which isn't a bad thing, it's just I found myself trying to rack my brains as to what happened next, rather than focusing on the book and just letting the story flow.

As a huge fan of Stephen King, I had a hard time rating this book. I want to love every single thing he writes. Which is impossible. So I waffled between a 3 and a 4.

The slow, creeping build in this book is magnificent. It's scary enough, and it hooks you and doesn't want to let you go.

SEMI SPOILER ALERT: What bugged me and bugged me and bugged me was the ending. While I love a bleak ending, I just thought it was so off track for King. Until a friend of mine suggested that this book is King's homage to HP Lovecraft. If you read it with THAT in mind, you'll think it's perfect. In fact, I might have to reread it with that in mind, because I think I'll get more out of it.

Even a "bad" Stephen King novel is generally a pretty decent read. And this is not a bad Stephen King novel. The man is a natural story teller. But the story is not what I expected. Reading the book jacket and critical reviews prepared me for a story of an Elmer Gantry style charlatan, a preacher man who is not what he seems. I have realized in recent years that I prefer King’s non-horror novels; i.e., 11/22/63 was one of my recent favorites. But Revival tricks you. Perhaps that is the point. There is very little in the way of supernatural or “scary” elements throughout most of the book. But those last 50 or so pages…look out! This is one of King’s creepiest, most unsettling stories in recent years. Be prepared for some nightmares afterwards!
