I read this because I'm going to be teaching it to my 8th grade students in the fall as part of the new required curriculum. I thought it was okay. It will probably be engaging to my students. The best part was the ending, when things turned away from the magic and more towards the reality and grief the girls had been avoiding the whole novel. I also loved the author's afterword about why she changed the La Llorona myth. Ultimately, I'm glad that it's in the curriculum and that our students will be exposed to more diverse reading and Mexican folklore.

Exploration of family, love of sisters, in a unique setting of present-day as well as their culture to appreciate who they are. The transformation is possible in each of us.

Great retelling. Though at times I felt the author gave us too much instead of letting us figure things out. Loved the sisters, especially the twins.
