Liked
- spontaneously burst into tears at intervals
- aside from the strong themes of Grief and Loss, it’s a heart-warming story about an atypical family
- lovely approach around above tough themes and situations with kids
- love JED, nice health poly representation
- a nice touch on the complications of addiction in grief, and hopeful rehab and recovery

Disliked
- emery’s whole deal. he just annoyed me.
- the narrators (/authors) voice for kids. I don’t know if he’s ever heard a child speak. (Audiobook)
- like it’s nice that Greg trusted Patrick this much and saw the mutual benefit but the *fuck* was he thinking Clara was clearly the better move?? I get that she’s *a lot* but??? Like it’s very nice to throw your recluse brother a life line but via your KIDS after LOSING THEIR MOM on the OPPOSITE COAST??! Insane. Greg was oddly written in general. Lord have mercy.

Pretty much the premise of Raising Helen, but the main character Patrick is called to look after his niece and nephew because their father (his brother) goes to rehab. Silly moments paired with conversations about grief and loss and living after experiencing death. Some parts felt a bit contrived but the banter between Uncle Patrick and the kids is very sweet.
