Annie  Bot tells a story about a AI company who creates companion robots. These AI generated robots come in various forms, but the story follows a special AI named Annie. She is purchased by a wealthy white male (Doug) after a devastating divorce with his black lawyer ex-wife (Gwen).

Throughout the book, we learn that Annie was originally purchased as a Cuddle Bunny (sex doll) but Doug wanted a more intimacy and switched her autodidactic. Annie learns how to cook & clean, make friends and navigate human emotions in real-time. More importantly, we learn more about Doug’s traumatic past and healing journey with his Annie companion.

Con: Race. I didn’t understand why Sierra Greer assigned specific races to these characters. Was it to elicit specific feelings and play into American Stereotypes?
Ronald= Black male, frenemy
Gwen= Black female, ex-wife, heartbreaker, physically ideal sex object who was the inspiration for Annie
Doug= White male, heartbroken, controlling
Tammy= Thirties, Brown woman, technician

Remove race from this story, how do you feel about it now?

Con: Body Issues. I was surprised that Annie wasn’t more affected by Doug’s constant comments about her body. She was learning everything else and yet she never took the initiative to lose weight or change her body to please him. (Not that I think she should have!)

Pro: Grief. It’s clear that everyone in this story deals with their grief differently. Jacobson, Cody and Maude with the loss of Kenny. Even Annie with the loss of Delta and the aftermath of escaping to Lake Champlain. Which reminds me, was that young man who approach Annie and Doug on their walk Delta reincarnated? That’s my theory.

In the end, I was not surprised Annie left Doug. We saw this coming with the Lake Champlain situation. However, as the reader I cant help but wonder what was the point. In the end, Doug shared all of the things Annie taught him as a result of her kindness and patience with him. He proclaimed his love for her and his plans for their future. She left him, so is it safe to assume he’s back where he started?! lol Heartbroken, bitter and controlling. Sigh.

You’re telling me I pushed through a drawn out documentation of how shitty a human being Doug is with his abusive relationship with Annie just for nothing to happen! I kept waiting for her to go terminator on his ass or just something interesting to happen. But nope. What a bloody letdown. Can’t believe I read a mid relationship book with a narc douchebag and submissive bot with a flaccid ending.
