This book sneaks up on you. You read along, thinking that surely Nebraskans are more interesting than Morris allows. Then he suddenly shifts away from silences and private unknowable lives to hit you with a powerful truth about gender, sexuality, or the passage of time. So the book includes luminous moments. But so much of it is so still and quiet, it made me hunger for fireworks.
