The Digging-est Dog by Eric Gurney, Al Perkins

Very strange book and hard to give a star rating to. Whiplash-inducing tonal shifts as it ping-pongs from powerfully maudlin 'abused dog' material to slapstick and silly wordplay back to endangered dog. I lol'd and I had fun with the diction of it but I would easily imagine a child being distressed by the dog's situation. Art is also really good.

This is the first book I remember reading and loving and rereading over and over. It is probably not the first book I read, but it shines in my memory.

I grew up with this book, so I love it. I read it to my niblings all the time and they love it. It's kind of a messed up story though. A dog who is ridiculed for not being able to dig, then shamed for when he over does it. Then finally worked like a dog (forgive the pun) at the end. So not a really very valuable book in terms of its life lessons, but still a fun read all around. 4 stars.

This was really cute. My son asked for it specifically. :) It ends a bit abruptly and some of the rhymes are iffy, but it’s fun.

a very cute book about a dog from a shelter who doesn't know how to dig, but when he figures it out he goes into overdrive.

An emergent reader that models redemption and forgiveness in a kid-friendly way.

After rereading this twice in the past few days, I recall distinctly why this was my absolute favorite beginning reader book as a child. The touching tale of a pet store dog who finds a home but doesn't know how to "dog," The Digging-est Dog explores what it means to have a family, how it can sometimes be taxing to try to fit in, and why friends are always important. I wish I could read this to a classroom full of young minds.
