Four Blondes by Candace Bushnell

I read the first story, then tried and DNFed the other three.

The first story was about a selfish and shallow woman who spent each of her summers at the Hamptons in a different rich guy's house. I kept hoping the story would arrive at some kind of a message or she would be taught a lesson, but no. Neither happened.

The second story was about a married couple, and it could have been a pair of interesting character studies, but the constant use of comments in parentheses drove me mad and I just couldn't go on.

The third story was a woman's diary. I'm sure that the author intentionally made her sound completely unbearable, but again, I just couldn't go on.

The fourth story was about a woman from New York trying her luck on the London marriage market. It was full of prejudice about British people, and I had just lost interest by this point.

To sum it up, I found nothing of the insight or the flawed but likable characters of Sex and the City. Everyone was shallow and annoying. What a disappointment.

Something compelled me to finish this book. Maybe it was this: none of the characters is likable, in a cartoonish way, but all of them have realistic inner dialogue. And I actually thought the segment about the movie star, dealing with the paparazzi, while obviously seriously depressed was kind of poignant. It's actually kind of awful to think that people (most people?) if you really were to get inside their heads, are just driven by their base desires, even while outwardly having things like morals, liberal politics, an appreciation of nice gardens, etc. Interesting...

Didn't actually realize this was short stories, oops. But the first one was definitely the best!

This book was awful. The characters sucked. The outdated gender roles and misogyny made me want to light the book on fire.

That was so boring! The stories were just about some dull people with no morals, nothing interesting at all.

I was let down... thought it'd be more like Sex & the City, but found it just kind of boring...

This is a totally trashy beach read. I have never read any of Candace Bushnell's stuff before, but I am a fan of Sex and the City, so I was interested in giving her a try.
This book takes you through the stories of 4 different women - a model, a columnist, a socialite and a writer. Its a quick and easy read that will keep you entertained but don't expect to get anything else out of this book.

4 stories about women living in New York in the 90s. Very much a product of it's time - reductive/derogatory towards men and women. Characters are completely unrelatable but you can't fantasise about being them because their lives are so undesirable.
It made me very sad to read that all of the characters are depressed because they are dating/married for money or status

Could hardly finish this. These women give women a BAD NAME. Vapid, selfish, manipulative. UGH.
