This book was a bit slow for me. Still an enjoyable book, I think it should be read and not listened as audio. With the slower pace, I found my mind wondering easier.

Still a good story, and I was invested in finding out who the bad guy was, and hit with a surprise as well!! I'll be continuing this series, but maybe with the physical books vs audio 🤔

This book wasn't good. It's about a serial killer being investigated by the FBI and local law enforcement in Virginia (which is where Kay Scarpetta comes in -she is in charge of all the state's pathologists, after all). The killer is killing couples, but the guy only really gets national attention when the killer kills the daughter of a significant "Washington DC" type.

This isn't really a murder mystery. I mean there are people killed, and Pete Marino, Benton Wesley, and Kay Scarpetta do some investigating, but there is no way anyone can actually work out who the murderer was. The way he is found has is a 2 step process, each of which his to have odds so astronomic, that they wouldn't have happened AT ALL in real life. The odds of it happening have to be something akin to being downed in an airplane, while on your way to pick up up your lottery winnings, after having been attacked by a shark, while surfing. In short, vanishingly small. There is no way that the murderer would suddenly move from 20-something couples, to another, significantly older couple, unless we need to have story move forward.

So, in short, if a story relies on a fluke like that, then I'm going to mentally check out, if I'm honest.

The denouement isn't particularly satisfying either. One character who could have been useful in future books in the series, is killed off, and we don't get the killers motivation, beyond him being a psycho, which seems to satisfy Ms Cornwall, but which I find disappointing.

This is the 3rd book of the Kay Scarpetta series and the relationship between Pete and Kay is so great! To be honest you want to hate Pete at first because he has a lot of biases/prejudices but it fits for the 90s. Everything wasn’t so welcoming back then. Kay is a balance for him. She corrects him so maybe we will get to see him grow and learn? We shall see.

PC is a very detailed author and I love it. She describes everything about an autopsy and it makes you feel like you are there in the room with Kay. She is a very descriptive writer and the woman can set a stage.

Rampant paranoia, conspiracy theories, and after just 3 books a simple pattern emerges, I do not really like.
Also the final twist after the first end, while well integrated, sews the problems up too neat, I would have liked to end the book without it.
That way it would have been a quite different ending and set a strong example why I do not like neither vigilantes nor vigilante killings.
Romance got worse, could have done without it. Too much background family/romance, should have cut that, the book would read better without it.
Still recommended, as a fast page-turner, but as I bought it, I think the ebooks are way too expensive. A cheap 1-5 Omnibus-Edition as is available as a paperback would be nice.

UGH! I was trucking along, really enjoying the story, and then the last 2 or 3 chapters hit. And they were lame. It was almost as if the author was typing and realized she needed to get to the grocery store before it closed, so she decided to end the book and call it a day. Terrible ending!

Still, I will read the others in this series because I liked the characters and the story, until the very end.
