Found a real unlikable protagonist to me, at last. I cannot stand her lack of class solidarity and general snobbery. Also the general air of ableism.

Wow, I absolutely loved this book! The atmospheric writing took me into a world filled with the tremendously recognisable darkness of this era. What a wonderful read! It took me to unexpected outcomes that I did not see coming and I love when a book does that for me!!

I would love to read more from this author. Well worth the read!

A slow-paced atmospheric gothic read with a main character you love to hate. No feisty heroine, but a manipulative girl with a dark gift who fits perfectly in this dark mystery with a nice twist at the end.

I got this arc in exchange for an honest review.

A dark mystery with a self-centred, greedy protagonist who is confident she is meant for great things. She's drawn to Fyneshade and wants to uncover it's mysteries while she is burdened with the task of being governess to a troubled young girl. All the characters are not quite as they seem, and everyone has alterior motives. It's a concisely written and well paced story that has a healthy sprinkling of magic. A twisting tale with plenty of darkness to it.

This book had a good plot that was well paced and well explained, with everything tied up well in the end, but it didn't grip me very much and I wasn't very invested in the characters or what happened to them. I found everyone in the book to be unlikable, however this wasn't necessarily a drawback as it would normally be, as the story itself was dark. The only issue it caused for me was that I didn't really care about the ending for our main character as I didn't really care about or like her and certainly wasn't routing for her. I enjoyed the descriptions of the house and the location.
