I would read anything Naomi Novik writes. She sets things up so beautifully and simply and every single payoff is so sweet. And as someone with Jewish heritage, it was really amazing to see not just Jewish characters in the book, but a real sense of familiarity and comfort with Jewish stories, culture, and heritage. It was subtle but there were definitely moments and lines that felt authentically Jewish to me. I really appreciated it. I would absolutely recommend this book or Uprooted to anybody who appreciates a good fantasy novel.

Could have been great but the characters fell flat.

Idk it just wasn't that interesting and at a certain point it's time to cut your losses. Too many first person narrators..once a character started experiencing lust for a real shit bag I was out.

Sometimes books need to be shorter

I really like Naomi Novik’s stories, and this book was a lovely and imaginative blend of The Ice Queen and Rumplestiltskin. But it is not as good as Uprooted or Temeraire. More like 3.5 stars.
