Much of my favorite work in the fantasy genre walks a careful line between the nerdy excess of classical world-building and the weed-smoke fug of improvised storytelling. Moebius is the exemplar of this balance, spinning entire worlds seemingly with no more planning than opening his sketchbook, but then returning to the worlds woven from this ad hoc approach to compostion and elaborating them, making them richer and more interconnected. This is the strength of Soto's work in The Secret Voice, in that it preserves the wonder and strangeness of something seen in a dream, but has the texture and detail of a lived-in world.
