If you read the first book, you know that a device exists that can control The Cursed One. I wish that this would be explained. Every time they use this device, it drives me crazy. How does it work? How did they rig up this technology that can control a living creature? It doesn't make sense to me.

There is not as much action and excitement in this book. It's more just journey and adventure and housing and defence strategizing.

I was starting to think that Rachel just gets more and more emotionally messed up throughout this series (whereas normally the main character grows and matures throughout the story). But, I'm happy to say that near the end of this book, Rachel begins to heal emotionally.

I found myself really interested by the character of Willow. She's super badass. I would like to see a short story in her perspective. She just seems like a very interesting character with an interesting backstory to me.

The ending was really good, but the rest left me a bit bored. If my rating were based merely on about the last 100 pages, it would be higher. However, because I wasn't as impressed with the majority of the book and I was thinking it was suffering from middle book syndrome during most of the book (I just wasn't fully pulled into the story), I settled on a rating of 3.5.

- I have mixed feelings about this one. I wasn't sure if I'd read the third book, but I think I will.

- For almost the whole book, I wanted Rachel to get swift kick in the butt. She needed someone to smack her and tell her to get over herself. I'm glad Quinn lectured her. It was what she needed. I'm glad Rachel was able to finally grieve.

- I don't like Logan. I don't think I've ever really liked him. I don't know what it is, but he just doesn't seem like the leader people would rally around.

- The stupid monologuing that Rachel and Logan do in their heads is tiresome! I understand thinking about things, but the monologues last WAY too long.

- There was a lot of filler between the story essentials. The group traveled a lot. I'm glad the ending had a lot more going on. The ending really saved the book for me.

- I hope the next book goes by quickly. I just want to find out what happens, so I can put this series behind me.

Oh... My... Jellybeans...

This book was so amazing I don't have the words to describe it! It was so worth the wait from the library let me tell ya! As I've mentioned a LOT of times, I'm an emotional reader and when a book invokes a reaction in me, they are at the 4 star level. But when they make me cry, laugh, and jump around like a crazy person because I'm so caught up that I think it's happening to me or my best friend? That is a five star book.

Deception gave me that reaction. There is a lot of heartbreak and I'll admit, some moping on Rachel's part but that's pretty justified considering how far she's come and what she's had to do to get there. The last half of the book is BRUTAL and is by far the best part :)

I have only one grievance that hardly registers on my radar. I was a bit confused on the explanation as to why Logan is from
SpoilerRowansmark
. When that is explained, I got a bit lost but maybe that's because I haven't read the first book for a while.

Five star book!!

There were like, 10 pages total of compelling plot. The rest I would sum up as walking to point A to point B. And the killer... lets just say I am not really impressed yet. I also think Quinn should be in love with Rachel to complicate things ;)

Deception is full of exactly that--Deception. Who can you trust when the greed for power takes precedence over loyalty? The ruthless Commander is back to claim the tech device and he has paired up with another city-state.

Logan and Rachel have their hands full. Not only does Logan have the weight of leading the remaining Baalboden citizens, but he is constantly having to reassure them that he is a nineteen-year-old fit for the job, even if he questions it himself at times. He doesn’t want to disappoint the people who have lost so much already at the hands of their former Commander, and to the Cursed One. Obstacles of inexperience and age are just a few minor implications against a much larger picture. Besides the fact that the Commander is after them, Rowansmark want what they believe was stolen from them, so the Baalboden survivors high-tail it to Lankenshire, in hopes that they can form an alliance and help against those that are coming after them.

The Wasteland proves to be vicious. Not only are there landscape hindrances, but Highwayman, an army, and the threat of the Cursed One at their feet. Deception is the perfect title for this story, as there is deception at every turn. Not only are they being tracked by a Rowansmark tracker, one of their own is hiding a secret as well. Who is the traitor amongst them is the big question.

Rachel is facing her own demons with difficulty. Even a strong willed woman can’t shake the hurt, betrayal, death, and thirst for revenge. It claws away and beats her up mentally. Loss has become second nature, but the effects have hindered her judgment. Her loyalty to the people and to Logan, exceptionally to Logan as he is the one thing she has left to live for, keeps her in line. Sylph is another that Rachel loves. Even through the most difficult of times, she keeps a smile on her face and spreads her love across her friends and the others. Her humor and kindness was a light in the dark.

“You aren’t unfeminine. You just stink at setting a nice table or sewing a decent dress.”

“It’s nice to have my differences be an asset instead of something that makes me the most unfeminine girl in the room.”

I was on edge as the story unfolded and trying to figure out who was the traitor. I cheered the group on while they were facing difficult passages, and waiting to see if they would even make it was driving me mad! The story flowed well but at one point I was beginning to wonder if there was a bigger bomb waiting to be dropped. AND let me tell you…you will be shocked when it does. I was totally blindsided by it.

These characters really grew on me. A few particular really stole the show in my opinion. I just love Willow and Quinn. The brother and sister duo fighting machines. Willow is fierce and says what’s on her mind. She is the one who will tell you what you don’t want to hear, but need to hear. She says it how it is and I just loved her for that. Quinn…sigh…He is the epitome of a knight in shining armor. Talk about a swoonworthy character! He is smart, strong, a great listener, and sooo much more. The relationship between Willow and her brother is strong and I just love how they are there to protect one another.

I loved the action and suspense and those twists that threw me for a loop time and time again. Logan and Rachel are so sweet together, but man, they had so much on their shoulders. Both of them had a lot to work through as individuals, but knowing they had one another to lean on, kept their hopes up and that everything would work out in time.

I usually get a tad bit annoyed when a character constantly is fighting an inner battle, complain about it, push it aside, then dwells on it more. I know Rachel was dealing with a lot, but it did get a little old. I wish she would have just been forthright with Logan the whole time instead of bottling it up. But when she had a conversation with Quinn, I couldn’t help but feel admiration for him, and sorrow for her. Always the tough girl and expected to be just that, it was time for Rachel to feel the natural emotions instead of pushing them away and face them.

I enjoyed Deception. I loved the action, the pacing and the characters. This left off on a little cliffy, and I cannot wait to see what will transpire in the next book.

I really enjoyed the first book, but this one was a bit disappointing.
The middle part of the book was so long and boring sometimes.
The ending was full of twists and excitement though.
So I actually have lots of mixed feelings about the story and characters.
Not really sure if I'll ever pick up the third book... is it worth it, you think??
