Another hypnotic dream of a novel from Modiano. The Paris he has created in my imagination expands a bit, deepens.

My first Modiano read; prose is  lovely without being drenched in metaphor or bogging down the narrative flow. It is indeed meandering, as we follow Odile and Louis through twists and turns in their journey through early adulthood. The pacing of the novel is slow despite its brevity, but overall it was a lovely read and a treatise on the passage of time. I found it oddly relatable with regards to how totally aimless and precarious young adulthood can be. I think it’s kind of funny how Odile and Louis are sort of passed around by these older adults, whom they observe in the throes of nostalgia. I admire Modiano’s style, but wasn’t super impressed with the story telling.

The end had some powerful quotable moments, but getting there felt draw out. Tone over character development.
