Such a great world, great characters, good story, but absolutely terrible execution. How many promises do these people make to each other only to intentionally break them in order to create some artificial tension for the reader? How many zigzagging double crosses do you put in the narrative before it becomes ridiculous? How pithy can a dialogue get? I read this sequel thinking that it might redeem some of the sins of book one, since the premise held promise. But alas, matey, this one was a disappointment.

There is something very dreamlike about the writing in this book, as it is very focussed on what is happening in the moment and on the personalities of just a handful of characters. The story at times reads like a fairytale and is easy to whip through - there were times where I would unknowingly read 50 pages or more in one sitting. While it was an enjoyable reading experience, it’s hard to say if the characters themselves will stick with me six months from now. I look forward to giving the author’s other work a try in the future.

Happy to have finally read this and rounded off the duology, but I didn't enjoy it quite as much as the first book. I think it's because the crew of the Merigold made the first novel so good (to me), and, apart from West and Fable, they rest of those characters weren't in this book very much.

The beauty of the covers of this duology is what drew me to it. However, the insides don’t quite match the beauty on the outside. I admit that I went into expecting beautiful writing and well developed characters that draw me in, but that wasn’t quite the case. I ended up bored and finished simply because I had already bought both rather than because I wanted to.

I really did enjoy the various nautical elements we got and thought they were mostly well done. However, everything just felt surface level and almost nonsensical at times. If the adventure and diving had taken center stage over the unbelievable romance, I think it would have been better.

That cover is still gorgeous though.
