This is a Christmas themed Silhouette Desire contemporary romance by BJ James. This book was published in 2000.
Jericho and Maria grew up together. They were friends as children then as they grew older they fell in love. But, Maria fell victim to a terrible crime and ran away from the bigoted small southern town. She stayed away for eighteen years. When she returns to do a story, her car is bombed. Jericho, now the sheriff wants Maria to leave for her own good. She refuses to leave until they find out who hates her so much. In the meantime Maria and Jericho pick up where they left off all those years ago.
The suspense was minimal due to the fact that we didn't really know who might have wanted Maria killed. The small town still held predjudices, but no one in particular was named.
The romance was different. These two stayed apart with no other relationships for eighteen years, never even talking or communicating in any way. That didn't seem plausible. They did share a bond, but picking back up so easily didn't seem likely to me.
Maria was able to bury some long held resentments and find out what really happened that night all those years ago and find peace and of course a HEA. This is a really quick read, only 185 pages long.
