I got this book because K.N. Banet has a short story, "Ancient and Immortal", included, featuring one of Jacky's siblings, Zuri. If you haven't delved into the Jacky Leon series yet - DO IT! It is Urban Fantasy gold, and the world is growing by leaps and bounds. If you've followed along with the family so far, then this short story fills in some blanks and personalizes Zuri in a way that the main narrative can't. If you haven't? It's alright. You might be missing the main crux of the story, but that has no effect on THIS story. You can read it just as presented, as a short story in this collection - one that entertains, introduces, and ends on a happy note.

As for the collection? Holy good smokes! This is a behemoth at over 2,000 pages! For my average speed of reading, my Kindle told me it'll take about 52 hours. Do you know what that is? Heaven. 38 stories. All Urban Fantasy. Some are by authors I already know and love, like K.N. Banet, Harper Wylde, and A.J. Macey. Others are new to me authors like Becca Blake, who will find a place on my TBR very quickly.

I love collections like this - one that fit a theme and offers me my own personal addiction - new authors to read. Cheers!

Reivew of Ancient and Immortal by K.N. Banet

2.8

It was a great opening, and then no real ending. It felt like the author either phoned in the last half of the book or else had written a much more involved ending that wound up being too long and was thusly trimmed way too far down. Basically, right after Kushim and Zuri get together, everything stops being good. Zuri turns into a different character and the plot flatlines. The plot really became more like an outline with small scenes, it was not a fully fleshed story. I was enjoying the initial part of the novella, so the end portion was a massive disappointment.

Mystic Motives: Ulterior Magic, Part 1 By Margo Bond Collins

3.5 stars.

***SERIAL WARNING*** Whilst the blurb does say it’s the beginning of a new series, it doesn’t make it clear that it is a serial rather than a set of interconnected stand-alones, so be aware. This story does end of a Happy For Now but the lead characters, Zandra and Rafe, are not even a couple yet, though they are part of the same group.

This short story is dual POV, and is primarily setting the scene for what looks a decent story but serials aren’t my thing.

I received a free copy of this story via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
